What makes ACN different from other service-oriented organizations?""

ACN’s focus is on the individual, abandoned child who might be forgotten or ignored without our intervention. We work with in-country NGOs so that the children to whom we commit our help are guaranteed continued support as they progress from one developmental stage to the next.

ACN is a 501 ©(3) nonprofit organization that envisions a world where all children not only have a home, but also access to education, medical care, counseling, and the vocational preparation necessary for them to grow into self-reliant adults.

Who are the children we help?

They are the abandoned and institutionalized children with life-threatening diseases. They are the abandoned and institutionalized children who are either stereotyped by their disability or institutionalized as a result of their disability/disabilities not being understood. They are the abandoned infants and toddlers who have not yet realized that they have been abandoned to institutionalized care. They are the children placed in foster care. They are the teens that find they have no future without positive intervention. They are all children in need.

Where do we extend our help?""

ACN is currently involved:

    • In Romania, with abandoned HIV-positive, abandoned learning disabled, abandoned infants and toddlers, and emotionally abandoned children
    • In Guatemala, with orphans facing vampire bat attacks
    • In Taiwan, with abandoned children of incarcerated parents
    • In Moldova, with older orphans and abandoned children who need to be presented with vocational training opportunities.
    • In Tanzania, where albino children are being killed for body parts used in potions believed to bring great wealth.

Through the assistance of regional volunteers, (please email ACN at fklein@assistingchildreninneed.org if you would like to assist ACN in this capacity) ACN receives information regarding abandoned children around the world who might need ACN help. It researches the case or cases referred, explores the possibility of area NGOs assisting with ACN case management, and often visits the case(s) to verify the need.

What form does our assistance take?

Our goal is not only to support efforts to provide abandoned and homeless children with shelter, nourishment, and medical care (many of these children suffer from life-threatening illnesses), but also to enable individual children to grow into self-reliant adults. In promoting self-reliance and self-care rather than welfare, we support programs that help older teenagers acquire necessary independent living skills and involve them in vocational training which will enable them to eventually leave the foster home, group residence, or institution and become productive members of their respective communities. If the programs described above do not already exist, we work with in-country NGOs to initiate them.
